Among the eight mountains in Nepal above 8000m, Mt. Makalu is the fourth tallest in Nepal and fifth highest Peak on the Earth with its height 8,463m. Mt. Makalu resides in the eastern Himalayas range just 19Km southeast of the giant Mt. Everest in the border of Nepal and China. At the base of Mt. Makalu, there lies a natural wonder: The Barun Valley. This valley facilitates with stunning elevated waterfalls falling inside the deep gorges, diverse species of flora and fauna with rich cultures of ethnic communities like Sherpa and Kirat. Although, this area is somewhat isolated, it is for sure that, every visitor who every step here will take a memorable reminiscence with them for their lifetime.

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be greeted by our team and transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. Take the rest of the day to relax and recover from your flight, or explore the vibrant city streets of Thamel. In the evening, join us for a welcome dinner where we’ll introduce the expedition team and discuss the journey ahead. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Today is a day of preparation, allowing you to rest and adjust to the time zone. You can take this opportunity to explore the cultural sights of Kathmandu, such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) or Durbar Square. Finalize your gear, and make sure you’re all set for the expedition. We start the adventure with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. From there, we drive to the small village of Num, situated at 1,560 meters. This is the gateway to Makalu, with stunning views of the Arun Valley. We’ll settle into our accommodations and prepare for the trek ahead. Overnight in Num.
Our trek begins as we descend through lush forests and terraced fields toward the Arun River. After crossing a suspension bridge, we begin a steep ascent to the village of Sheduwa. The trail offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Overnight in Sheduwa.
Today’s trek takes us through rhododendron forests and traditional farming villages as we make our way to Tashi Gaun, a Sherpa village surrounded by terraced fields. The path gradually ascends, and we begin to feel the change in altitude. Tashi Gaun offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Overnight in Tashi Gaun.
We spend the day in Tashi Gaun to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. This is an important step to ensure a successful and safe expedition. You can take a short hike around the village or simply relax and enjoy the views. Overnight in Tashi Gaun.
We leave Tashi Gaun and begin a steep climb through forests of rhododendron and oak, eventually reaching Khongma. As we ascend, the landscape changes to more rugged alpine terrain. Khongma is a small settlement offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Overnight in Khongma.
Today, we cross the Shipton La pass at 4,200 meters before descending to Mumbak. The trail offers breathtaking views of Makalu and Chamlang, as well as several small glacial lakes along the way. After a steep descent, we reach Mumbak, where we’ll rest for the night. Overnight in Mumbak.
We continue our trek through alpine terrain, with towering cliffs and glaciers surrounding us as we head toward Nehe Kharka. The trail follows the Barun River, and the landscape becomes more rugged as we gain altitude. Nehe Kharka is a remote valley, where we’ll set up camp for the night. Overnight in Nehe Kharka.
Today’s trek takes us higher into the heart of the Himalayas as we reach Makalu Lower Base Camp. The trail becomes more challenging, but the views of the surrounding peaks make it all worthwhile. We’ll settle into the base camp, where we’ll spend the next few days preparing for the ascent. Overnight at Makalu Lower Base Camp.
We spend the day acclimatizing at Lower Base Camp, giving our bodies time to adjust to the high altitude. You can take a short hike around the area or relax at camp. This is an essential part of preparing for the climb ahead. Overnight at Lower Base Camp.
Another day is dedicated to acclimatization, allowing your body to fully adjust to the altitude before we begin the ascent. You can use this day to explore nearby glaciers and enjoy the stunning views of Makalu. Overnight at Lower Base Camp.
We move from Lower Base Camp to Higher Base Camp today, ascending further into the rugged, glaciated landscape. This hike brings us closer to the heart of Makalu and prepares us for the challenging climb to the summit. The views from Higher Base Camp are truly awe-inspiring. Overnight at Higher Base Camp.
Over the next few weeks, we will attempt the ascent of Mount Makalu, the fifth-highest peak in the world. The climb is technically demanding, involving multiple camps and acclimatization phases. Our experienced guides will lead you through each stage, ensuring safety and proper pacing. The reward is standing atop the 8,163-meter summit, surrounded by the breathtaking panorama of the Himalayas.
After the successful summit, we take a day to pack up and clean the base camp. It’s important to leave no trace and maintain the pristine environment of the mountains. Our team will ensure all equipment is packed and the area is left as we found it. Overnight at Lower Base Camp.
We begin our return journey, descending from Makalu Base Camp to Yangle Kharka. The descent offers a new perspective on the landscapes we previously passed, with opportunities to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Overnight in Yangle Kharka.
Today we continue descending, making our way from Yangle Kharka back to Khongma. The trail is familiar, but the change in altitude and perspective gives it a new beauty. We’ll take it slow, enjoying the stunning views along the way. Overnight in Khongma.
We trek from Khongma to Sheduwa, descending further into lush forests and terraced fields. The lower altitudes bring warmer temperatures and a change in the landscape. We’ll reach Sheduwa by late afternoon and settle in for the night. Overnight in Sheduwa.
Our final trekking day takes us from Sheduwa to Num. From there, we’ll drive back to Tumlingtar, marking the end of our trekking adventure. The journey through the mountains will have left us with unforgettable memories and a sense of accomplishment. Overnight in Tumlingtar.
We catch an early morning flight from Tumlingtar back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, where you can rest and reflect on the incredible journey. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore Kathmandu or relax. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Today is a free day to explore the cultural and historical sights of Kathmandu at your leisure. You can visit the famous temples and monasteries, shop for souvenirs, or simply relax at your hotel. In the evening, we’ll gather for a farewell dinner to celebrate the success of the expedition. Overnight in Kathmandu.
