Among the eight mountains in Nepal above 8000m, Mt. Makalu is the fourth tallest in Nepal and fifth highest Peak on the Earth with its height 8,463m. Mt. Makalu resides in the eastern Himalayas range just 19Km southeast of the giant Mt. Everest in the border of Nepal and China. At the base of Mt. Makalu, there lies a natural wonder: The Barun Valley. This valley facilitates with stunning elevated waterfalls falling inside the deep gorges, diverse species of flora and fauna with rich cultures of ethnic communities like Sherpa and Kirat. Although, this area is somewhat isolated, it is for sure that, every visitor who every step here will take a memorable reminiscence with them for their lifetime.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Kathmandu and Transfer to Hotel

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be greeted by our team and transferred to your hotel in Kathmandu. Take the rest of the day to relax and recover from your flight, or explore the vibrant city streets of Thamel. In the evening, join us for a welcome dinner where we’ll introduce the expedition team and discuss the journey ahead. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 2: Rest Day in Kathmandu

Today is a day of preparation, allowing you to rest and adjust to the time zone. You can take this opportunity to explore the cultural sights of Kathmandu, such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) or Durbar Square. Finalize your gear, and make sure you’re all set for the expedition. Overnight at your hotel.

Day 3: Fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and Drive to Num (1,560 m)

We start the adventure with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. From there, we drive to the small village of Num, situated at 1,560 meters. This is the gateway to Makalu, with stunning views of the Arun Valley. We’ll settle into our accommodations and prepare for the trek ahead. Overnight in Num.

Day 4: Trek from Num to Sheduwa (1,510 m)

Our trek begins as we descend through lush forests and terraced fields toward the Arun River. After crossing a suspension bridge, we begin a steep ascent to the village of Sheduwa. The trail offers beautiful views of the surrounding hills and valleys. Overnight in Sheduwa.

Day 5: Trek from Sheduwa to Tashi Gaun (2,070 m)

Today’s trek takes us through rhododendron forests and traditional farming villages as we make our way to Tashi Gaun, a Sherpa village surrounded by terraced fields. The path gradually ascends, and we begin to feel the change in altitude. Tashi Gaun offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Overnight in Tashi Gaun.

Day 6: Acclimatization Day in Tashi Gaun

We spend the day in Tashi Gaun to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. This is an important step to ensure a successful and safe expedition. You can take a short hike around the village or simply relax and enjoy the views. Overnight in Tashi Gaun.

Day 7: Trek from Tashi Gaun to Khongma (3,760 m)

We leave Tashi Gaun and begin a steep climb through forests of rhododendron and oak, eventually reaching Khongma. As we ascend, the landscape changes to more rugged alpine terrain. Khongma is a small settlement offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks. Overnight in Khongma.

Day 8: Trek from Khongma to Mumbak (3,520 m)

Today, we cross the Shipton La pass at 4,200 meters before descending to Mumbak. The trail offers breathtaking views of Makalu and Chamlang, as well as several small glacial lakes along the way. After a steep descent, we reach Mumbak, where we’ll rest for the night. Overnight in Mumbak.

Day 9: Trek from Mumbak to Nehe Kharka (4,320 m)

We continue our trek through alpine terrain, with towering cliffs and glaciers surrounding us as we head toward Nehe Kharka. The trail follows the Barun River, and the landscape becomes more rugged as we gain altitude. Nehe Kharka is a remote valley, where we’ll set up camp for the night. Overnight in Nehe Kharka.

Day 10: Trek from Nehe Kharka to Makalu Lower Base Camp (4,870 m)

Today’s trek takes us higher into the heart of the Himalayas as we reach Makalu Lower Base Camp. The trail becomes more challenging, but the views of the surrounding peaks make it all worthwhile. We’ll settle into the base camp, where we’ll spend the next few days preparing for the ascent. Overnight at Makalu Lower Base Camp.

Day 11: Acclimatization Day at Lower Base Camp

We spend the day acclimatizing at Lower Base Camp, giving our bodies time to adjust to the high altitude. You can take a short hike around the area or relax at camp. This is an essential part of preparing for the climb ahead. Overnight at Lower Base Camp.

Day 12: Acclimatization Day at Lower Base Camp

Another day is dedicated to acclimatization, allowing your body to fully adjust to the altitude before we begin the ascent. You can use this day to explore nearby glaciers and enjoy the stunning views of Makalu. Overnight at Lower Base Camp.

Day 13: Hike from Lower Base Camp to Higher Base Camp

We move from Lower Base Camp to Higher Base Camp today, ascending further into the rugged, glaciated landscape. This hike brings us closer to the heart of Makalu and prepares us for the challenging climb to the summit. The views from Higher Base Camp are truly awe-inspiring. Overnight at Higher Base Camp.

Days 14-42: Climbing Period – Base Camp to Makalu Summit (8,163 m)

Over the next few weeks, we will attempt the ascent of Mount Makalu, the fifth-highest peak in the world. The climb is technically demanding, involving multiple camps and acclimatization phases. Our experienced guides will lead you through each stage, ensuring safety and proper pacing. The reward is standing atop the 8,163-meter summit, surrounded by the breathtaking panorama of the Himalayas.

Day 43: Preparation to Return – Base Camp Cleaning

After the successful summit, we take a day to pack up and clean the base camp. It’s important to leave no trace and maintain the pristine environment of the mountains. Our team will ensure all equipment is packed and the area is left as we found it. Overnight at Lower Base Camp.

Day 44: Trek from Makalu Base Camp to Yangle Kharka

We begin our return journey, descending from Makalu Base Camp to Yangle Kharka. The descent offers a new perspective on the landscapes we previously passed, with opportunities to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Overnight in Yangle Kharka.

Day 45: Trek from Yangle Kharka to Khongma

Today we continue descending, making our way from Yangle Kharka back to Khongma. The trail is familiar, but the change in altitude and perspective gives it a new beauty. We’ll take it slow, enjoying the stunning views along the way. Overnight in Khongma.

Day 46: Trek from Khongma to Sheduwa

We trek from Khongma to Sheduwa, descending further into lush forests and terraced fields. The lower altitudes bring warmer temperatures and a change in the landscape. We’ll reach Sheduwa by late afternoon and settle in for the night. Overnight in Sheduwa.

Day 47: Trek from Sheduwa to Num and Drive to Tumlingtar

Our final trekking day takes us from Sheduwa to Num. From there, we’ll drive back to Tumlingtar, marking the end of our trekking adventure. The journey through the mountains will have left us with unforgettable memories and a sense of accomplishment. Overnight in Tumlingtar.

Day 48: Fly from Tumlingtar to Kathmandu

We catch an early morning flight from Tumlingtar back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel, where you can rest and reflect on the incredible journey. The remainder of the day is free for you to explore Kathmandu or relax. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 49: Free Day in Kathmandu

Today is a free day to explore the cultural and historical sights of Kathmandu at your leisure. You can visit the famous temples and monasteries, shop for souvenirs, or simply relax at your hotel. In the evening, we’ll gather for a farewell dinner to celebrate the success of the expedition. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 50: International Departure

After an unforgettable 50-day journey, it’s time to bid farewell to Nepal. Our team will transfer you to the airport for your international departure. We hope you leave with lifelong memories and a deep appreciation for the majesty of the Himalayas. Safe travels!

  • Arrival & Departure: Airport – Hotel transfers – Airport (Pick Up and Drop).
  • Hotel Accommodation in Kathmandu: 4 nights hotel accommodation (3-star category) in Kathmandu on BB plan- Sharing Twin Bed Room.
  • Welcome Dinner: One Welcome Dinner in tourist standard restaurant in Kathmandu with Office’s Staffs.
  • Permit: Expedition Royalty and permit of Nepal Government to climb Mt. Makalu, Makalu-Barun National Park permit & fee.
  • Liaison Officer:1 Government Liaison officer with full equipment, salary and accommodation.
  • Garbage Management:Stool Shipment Transfer & Garbage Deposit fees.
  • Insurance:Medical & Emergency rescue Insurance for all involved Nepalese staffs during the trek and expedition.

  • Member transportation:
    Air Transportation (Domestic Flight): Fly from Kathmandu – Tumlingtar and drive from Tumlingtar to Num. While returning drive from Num to Tumlingtar and fly from Tumlingtar – Kathmandu, as per itinerary.
  • Expedition Stuffs Transportation:Necessary all equipment Transportation for all Members and Staffs from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar (by air cargo/vehicle) and to Base camp (by Jeep and Porters) – While returning: Base camp to Tumlingtar (by porters and Jeep) and Tumlingtar to Kathmandu (by air cargo/vehicle). –Member’s personal equipment will be transport by air.
  • Member Luggage:Up to 60 Kg per member for personal baggage during the trek carrying by porter or Yak.
  • Food and Lodging: 3 meals a day (BLD; including tea and coffee) along with accessible accommodation at Hotel/Lodge/Tea house/Camp during the trek and BC. Well-managed base camp set up for member & Staffs. Kailas or the north face tents will be set up while camping in sharing basis.
  • All Necessary equipment for Campingduring the trek.
  • Porter:Porters per member up to Base camp from Num & Porters return from Base camp to Num.
  • Base Camp Staff:  Experienced and well-trained Base Camp Cook & kitchen Helpers as required.

  • Base Camp Tent: Each member will have individual tent in Base Camp.

  • Oxygen Bottle (O2): Summit Oxygen cylinder: 2 oxygen bottles (4 ltrs.) for each member and 1-oxygen bottles for each high-altitude Sherpa. **
  • Oxygen Mask & Regulator: 1 Set of Summit Oxygen mask & regulator for each member and high-altitude Sherpa. **
  • Back up Oxygen Cylinder, mask and regulator (with appropriate charge).
  • High camp service:  High Altitude Tent, Necessary cooking EPI gas, cooking pots for member, High food for member, Sherpa, all climbing and other crews at (C1) (C2) (C3) and (C4). Group climbing gears, fixed and dynamic rope during the climbing period as required.
  • Rope Fixing Team: The team of experienced Sherpas will fix the route on Makalu (no extra charge will be applied to members).
  • Satellite Phone for emergency communication carrying by Sherpa, also available for members with appropriate charge.
  • Walkie-Talkie: Walkie –Talkie for communicating from Base Camp to Mountain and Mountain to Base Camp.

**Note : All expedition stuffs and equipment have to return after the expedition.

  • Lunch & dinner during the stay in Kathmandu (also in case of early return from Trekking / Expedition than the scheduled itinerary).
  • Extra nights’ accommodation in Kathmandu. In case of early arrival or late departure, early return from Trekking / Expedition, or domestic flight cancellation (due to any other reason) than the scheduled itinerary.
  • Insurance covering both medical and high-altitude evacuation costs (for the trip cancellation, interruption, high-altitude rescue & air evacuation, medical treatment, repatriation, etc.)
